When Job Searching Becomes a Test of Self-Confidence

When Job Searching Becomes a Test of Self-Confidence

Long-term unemployment can affect not only financial security but also the way we see ourselves and our own abilities.

When someone loses their job, attention usually focuses on the financial challenges. However, unemployment can also have a significant impact on mental wellbeing, especially when it lasts for a longer period. As weeks turn into months, many people begin to question not only their career prospects but also their own abilities. Self-confidence may gradually decline, motivation can fade, and even everyday tasks that once seemed simple may become more difficult. This is one of the less visible consequences of long-term unemployment, yet it is something we should talk about more often.

When someone has been looking for work without success for a long time, they may gradually lose not only their self-confidence but also their belief that they can change their situation. In psychology, this is known as self-efficacy, the belief that we are capable of achieving our goals and influencing the course of our own lives. Strong self-efficacy can help people see the challenges of job searching as obstacles that can be overcome rather than as permanent failures. When this belief weakens, however, motivation often decreases, stress increases, and it becomes harder to keep applying for new opportunities.

Over time, it is easy to start thinking, "I'm not good enough." In reality, the outcome of a job application can be influenced by many factors, including labour market conditions, the economic environment, or simply timing.

Another important factor in coping with difficult situations is resilience, the ability to recover from setbacks, adapt to change, and maintain hope for the future. Resilience is not something we are simply born with. It is a skill that can be developed over time, for example through supportive relationships, setting realistic goals, and recognizing small achievements along the way.

Unemployment often puts both self-confidence and perseverance to the test, but with the right support, these strengths can be rebuilt.
